The Weber Charcoal Grill is without a doubt one of the most successful BBQ grilling products ever made and it is sold worldwide and recognized for its versatility, quality, and capacity. The Weber 22 Inch Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill comes with a large table, gas-powered charcoal lighter, digital timer, and Weber’s Gourmet BBQ System cooking grate. Simply put, this is a great charcoal grill capable of producing many cooking styles and an authentic cookout experience.
The Weber Performer Deluxe is the pinnacle of the Weber charcoal empire and the table-mounted version is particularly convenient and easy to use. It has all the bells and whistles, including Weber’s gas-powered charcoal ignition system. The gas ignition system on the grill is fueled by a standard disposable propane bottle that feeds a burner mounted near the center of the grill (underneath the coal grate). All that is needed is to pour in some charcoal, turn on the gas, and push the ignition button. In less than 10 minutes, the charcoal is ready to be spread out for cooking. So, lets have a closer look.

Our Weber 22 Inch Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill Review
Weber’s Performer Deluxe 22″ Charcoal Grill is a feature rich version of the Original Kettle 22″ on a cart. The new 2015 Performers come standard with Weber’s Gourmet BBQ Cooking System which had been available only as an option. The system consists of Weber’s plated steel 22.5″ grate with hinged sides for replenishing coal and a removable round center grate that let’s grillers insert optional cook surfaces like a Wok, Griddle or Pizza Stone. A removable curved warming rack is also available.
The cart has two large wheels, two locking casters and a large work surface with built-in tool hooks and a removable LCD cook timer. It also has Weber’s Touch-N-Go gas ignition that lets you light charcoal with a small burner under the coal grate, fueled from a one-pound propane tank. A charcoal storage bin is located under the work surface. The new Performer Deluxe comes with two char-baskets to hold and easily move charcoal under the grate to create hot direct and cooler indirect zones. Another new feature is the redesigned nylon lid handle that adds a protective heat shield between your fingers and the lid.
A tuck away lid holder cradles the lid off to the side while you tend the feast. Performers have an enclosed receptacle attached to the bottom to capture and hold ash, so it cannot blow around. It comes off quickly for easy disposal of ash. Although the name changed from Performer Platinum 22.5″ to Performer Deluxe 22″, Weber specs declare the grate is still 22.5″ diameter with the same 363 square inch capacity. The obligatory lid thermometer is thrown in to sweeten the deal, but these antique heat indicators are inaccurate. Do yourself a favor and pick up a digital thermometer. You’ll see an immediate improvement in your grilling.

22” Performer Deluxe Size/Portability
The Performer Deluxe weighs 99 pounds, but they’ve installed great wheels, so you’ll be able to roll it out into the back garden with very little effort. The measurements are 41.2 inches in length by 28.5 inches of width and the height is 50.2 inches, so it’s a pretty big unit, that offers lots of space for all your cooking needs, but if you want to transport it you’ll have to take the Performer apart and re-assemble.
Fortunately, the assembly is doable in 15 minutes, following the instructions in the manual, so you’ll be able to take it with you for camping trips and tailgating parties. If you recognize the bowl, that’s because it’s the same design Weber used on the Original Kettle Grill, with the difference here being the inclusion of the wheeled cart with extra space for food preparation.
What Comes With The 22” Performer Deluxe
This specific model comes with Weber’s Gourmet BBQ System cooking grates. The steel-plated, hinged grate has a removable center section that can be replaced with a wide range of add-on accessories to give the grill greater versatility—from a pizza stone to a Danish Ebelskiver pan. One drawback to the grill is the digital cooking timer feature. Unfortunately, this is nothing more than an electronic 99-minute egg timer. Because it only goes on for 99 minutes, it’s useless for long cook times, which many grill enthusiasts need. Because this timer can be easily bought at almost any store for just a few dollars, it can be seen as more of a gimmick than a feature.
The Grill Has:
– 363 square inches of cooking space.
– A Weber’s Gourmet BBQ System cooking grate.
– A gas burner with push-button ignition for lighting charcoal.
– A removable digital cook timer.
– A porcelain powder coated steel lid and fire bowl.
– Aluminum vents and an ash catcher.
– Plastic, powder-coated steel, and stainless-steel cart construction.
– A large plastic charcoal bin.
– Two aluminum charcoal baskets for indirect grilling.
– A roll top lid.

22” Performer Deluxe Build Quality
It’s true that the Performer Deluxe doesn’t quite measure up to older models in terms of being “heavy duty”, but when compared to other charcoal grills in its price range, this model stands out above the rest. When fully assembled, you’re looking at a grill that measures 43.5-inch by 48-inch by 30-inch and weighs around 100 pounds. The wheels of the cart make it easy and convenient to roll your grill out to the backyard with little effort.
One of the best qualities about its design are the grates. They’re made of heavy-duty steel and are the perfect thickness for retaining the right amount of heat for even cooking. These grates are reminiscent of the Original Kettle, but you won’t find this quality of grate on some of Weber’s other models. Particularly the fact that you can pair these grates with Weber’s other add-on cooking surfaces, you have a high-quality grill at a great value of a price.
22” Performer Deluxe One Touch Cleaning
One of the less than exciting things about grilling with charcoal is removing and cleaning up the ash after you’re done. In some grill models, this can be a cumbersome task that is put off until it is impossible to put off any longer. However, with the new Weber Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill, this is not an issue anymore. This model features a removable ash catcher that is a high-capacity unit and is constructed out of strong aluminum. This means you can easily hold a larger amount of ash before you have to dispose of it. The unit provides an easy way to get rid of your ash pile without causing issues to your grill. Simply remove it from the bowl, empty it out, and you’re ready to go for your next grilling cycle.
The One-Touch cleaning system means much less mess, although a couple of customers did mention they had a little difficulty removing it. This is a tried and tested system used on other Weber grills and it seems to work well.
22” Performer Deluxe Assembly
You should be aware that full assembly is required, but don’t let that scare you as full and detailed instructions are included. The manual has 16 pages of diagrams with very little text on how to put the grill together. It might seem like a big job but most comments from customers are that it isn’t a difficult at all.

22” Performer Deluxe Ease of Use
Many of the features provided with the Weber Performer make it a simple to use the grill for the whole family. The patented Electronic Push-n-Go igniter makes it easy to light your grill and get to cooking as soon as possible. There are other features such as the painted table that provides you with a sleek, stylish look to keep all your grilling tools close at hand. A thermometer is built-into the lid where you can easily keep a watch on how the temperature inside the grill is doing without having to lose heat in opening the lid. Tool hooks are also attached on the side to help you keep all your spatulas, tongs, and more within reach when you’re in the throes of grilling your favorite steak or burgers.
As we’ve said, the Weber Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill is truly easy to use. Follow the instructions, and your grill will be set up in next to no time. You don’t have to be an expert grill master to use the Performer Deluxe. Simply use the Touch-N-Go ignition to light your charcoal, and in ten minutes, you’re ready to cook!
We are especially happy with how easy it was to move the charcoal baskets to give our grill direct and indirect heat zones. This gave us the ability to cook multiple kinds of food at the same time and stay in control of the cooking temperatures. We could cook our meat over direct heat while our grilled veggies finished cooking over the indirect heat zone, meaning our whole meal finished at the same time and was served Hot!
Make sure you keep your grill covered when it’s left outside in the elements. Your charcoal bin may be weather protected, but your grill isn’t. Without a cover, you could see damage from rain or other weather, and you want to keep this grill working at its optimum performance for years to come.

22” Performer Deluxe Performance
I mentioned the bowl was the same as on the Original Kettle, and while this is true, when it comes to design and how it looks; there’s more to it than that. In gas grilling, BTU output and grates determine a products success, whereas in charcoal grilling, grates are all-important. Grates retain heat, and disperse it outwardly, enabling food to cook, and the speed at which they do this, along with how evenly they hold heat inside, is the difference between greatness, and an average taste.
Weber did something magical here with the grates; they’re the perfect thickness, are made of solid cast-iron, and cook food in a way Weber have tried to re-create on other grills like the Original Kettle, but never quite succeeded. These grills are very good, and with the Performer, you get magical moist flavor-filled end results that have no parallels. When you pair these grates, with the added benefit of the bowl system enabling you to cook whole chickens and turkeys, as well as stake and ribs, you get outrageously good value.
Have you ever started cooking, and you got called inside almost immediately, only to run back out fearing your food might be burnt? Have you ever been grilling, and felt like you’d rather be watching TV until the food is done? Usually, you’d be risking an imperfect dinner, but Weber have helpfully included a detachable timer, so you can take it with you wherever you go, and always be in full control of your barbecue. This is classic Weber, to have an idea of what specific things would make grilling easier for customers and adding them on.
In this same vain, the ash-catcher on the Performer Deluxe, will also please customers. Isn’t it annoying to see ash flying around as you cook? Well, the Performers ash-catcher is enclosed so none escapes, and ash will stick to its surface at the bottom. When you want to clean it out, the ash will simply fall into a garbage bag. The whole grill is just as easy to clean, with Weber’s porcelain-enamel coating, so one wipe will completely clean the grill, ready for its next use. This way you can enjoy your 363 square inches of space, rather than worry about how long it’s going to take to scrape all the debris off it.
The only thing I’d say against the Performer is that they tried to sweeten the deal by including a lid thermometer, but it doesn’t work very well and isn’t all that accurate. Fortunately, the Performer does heat up quickly and reaches temperatures of over 470 degrees; just don’t rely on the thermometer to tell you that.

Weber BBQ Kettles enjoy evergreen popularity from one generation to the next because they are durable, and you can cook just about anything you want on them. Pile up coal on one side to sear steaks or set up 2-zone roasting, Build a nice even bed of coal for general cooking. Add a Slow ‘N Sear and make great smoked ribs and brisket. Another useful accessory is the Smoke EZ Grill Conversion Kit, which not only turns your kettle into a smoker, but increases capacity as well. The tight seal between the lid and body makes the dampers very effective and provides excellent heat control.
Other than some slight flaws with the lid thermometer and removable cooking timer, we found the Weber Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill to be a high-quality product that is well worth its price tag. We enjoyed how easy it was to use and were highly impressed with all of its unique features. This is one charcoal grill we can recommend to everyone, from beginner to expert level griller.
Weber 22” Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill Customer Reviews
“I started with charcoal grilling on a Weber kettle and always loved it but wanted more work space. The Performer Deluxe has work space in spades, and I love it! This is a well-known grill, so I won’t get too wordy. As a summary for those with short attention spans, just buy this grill, I can’t see you regretting the purchase, there is just so much to love. And now for the pro/con list:
Huge work surface is my favorite feature. It is no longer plastic, but a texture painted metal and very sturdy. Plenty of room to have plates laid out ready to receive burgers, franks, etc.. You can have your foil/paper laid out, plop your pork butt, ribs, brisket onto it, juice it, wrap it up, and back on the grill in moments. No walking to a work surface, it’s right there!
Much more stable than the kettle. I always worry about the kids knocking the kettle over, but this thing is solid as a rock. I don’t worry when rolling it with lit charcoal like with the Kettle.
Weber customer service. Have a problem? Weber will make it right. Mine came with a broken leg support. A short call to Weber and they sent me a new one.
Weber build quality. This thing is built really well, and well thought out too. They are always improving little details. For instance, the lid on this model now sits more upright when put in the holder so that it doesn’t get in your way as much as the previous model. I would still have liked to see a lid hanger on the inside of the lid, more on that in the Cons section. The hole in the center of the grate and hinged sides give you all the access you could need to your fuel grate during a cook. I use the snake/fuse method when smoking and not having to take the grate off to extend the snake is really nice.
Push button lighting of your charcoal! This is a much larger benefit than I thought it would be. No more bits of burning paper and ash flying around, no lighter, matches, torches, whatever…just turn the dial, push the button, and you have flame on your charcoal. It lights the charcoal faster and more thoroughly than the paper method does too, so you reduce your startup time by a good 5 minutes. If you grill as much as I do this adds up. And if you are one of those people that use lighter fluid then stop reading this and BUY THIS NOW.
The ash pan is a must have, especially if it is windy where you live. Keeps embers and ashes from blowing around. The fuel bin is a handy spot to store charcoal and a spare propane cylinder. Excellent warranty.
Screws for lid holder protrude into the kettle in a way that can interfere with grate removal/replacement. Not in a big way, but still can be annoying. Hooks for tools on the front aren’t as useful as the hooks on the handles of the kettles. Still, I have tried to figure out what I would do differently and couldn’t see a better way of doing it.
No lid on fuel bin. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Spiders and such won’t get in if there is a lid, this doesn’t have one. You can use a bin liner and a bungee cord as a makeshift lid if you want.
No hook on inside of lid. It’s not a bid deal since you have the great lid basket, but it seems like they should have left the classic hanger hook on the inside of the lid, so you could hang it low if you wanted to. I asked Weber why they removed it and the nice lady said she didn’t know.
The bottom shelf doesn’t give you much storage space as there is a bin, tools hanging, and the ash pan taking up most of the access to the shelf. It is good for keeping accessories like rib racks and such on, but not super useful because of the limited access.
Still no markings on the bottom vent slider to show how open/closed the vents are. You would think this would be easy for them to do, and since you can’t see your vents a lot of the time it would be very handy. Just use a sharpie and mark 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 percent open on the metal. Then you will have a very good idea of how your vent is set when you can’t actually see it. Because of the shape of the vent lobes the markings won’t be linear, but it’s easy enough to eyeball.
Larger and heavier than the Kettle. Not easy to take to the lake like the Kettle. But really, portability is what the Smokey Joe excels at, so just buy a Joe and use it for travel.
Overall, my cons are small and almost nitpicks. The fact remains that this is the best grill I have ever used, bar none. You can grill, braise, broil, smoke, and cook low and slow. I’ve made some amazing food on this grill, and I’ll be doing it for years to come since this grill is built to last.” …. Read More
“This is the best grill I have ever owned. I much prefer cooking on charcoal rather than gas. I’ve always found I have much better feel for the heat, and nothing beats the flavor of charcoal-grilled food. The only thing I really liked about the gas grill I owned in the past was the convenience of lighting and getting ready to cook quickly. With the gas ignition system, this grill is the best of both. I found it easy to assemble in about 90 minutes working by myself. All of the parts fit properly, and the finish is excellent.
The attached table is something I never had before. I was always dragging out a snack tray or something else to work on, so the convenience of the table was something I never realized how much I missed. The only feature I’m not completely sold on yet is the removable center of the cooking grate. If I decide to buy any of the optional inserts I may see the light, but at the moment it seems unnecessary. Overall, this was a great buy!” …. Read More
