The Weber 22-Inch Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill is the same basic kettle body as the Original Kettle 22″, but instead of just slots on the bottom through which ash falls onto an open tray, the Premium has an enclosed receptacle attached to capture and hold the ash. Also, you will find that it comes off quickly for easy disposal of this collected ash. Premium also comes with a useful hinged cooking grate that allows you to easily replenish coal without removing the cooking food.
Weber Kettles enjoy evergreen popularity from one generation to the next because they are durable, and you can cook just about anything you want on them. Pile up coal on one side to sear steaks or set up 2-zone roasting, Build a nice even bed of coal for general cooking. Add a Slow ‘N Sear and make great smoked ribs and BBQ brisket. Another useful accessory that is available is the Smoke EZ Grill Conversion Kit, which not only turns your kettle into a smoker, but increases capacity as well. The tight seal between the lid and body makes the dampers very effective and provides excellent heat control.

Our Weber 22-Inch Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill Review
Before we start our Weber 22-Inch Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill Review we would like to clear something up. The parabolic shape of the Weber Kettle is not a more efficient heat reflector than other shapes. By far the vast majority of the heat is radiated directly from the surface of the glowing coals with some more reflected from the sides. Very little heat is being reflected off the curved bottom of the bowl. There is a solid barrier in the way: The bed of coals. Any heat that hits the bottom of the kettle just bounces back into the coal pile. So, the parabolic shape of the kettle is no more efficient than a square box.
In 2015 Weber made a few changes to some of their classic kettles. Premium 22″, Formerly One-Touch Gold 22.5″, has new nylon handles. The lid handle adds a protective heat shield between your fingers and the lid. The side handle now has useful, integrated tool hooks. Previously the legs just popped into brackets. Now they are secured to the body with spring loaded pins, which also enables them to be easily removed. AND, Premium 22″ is available in black, copper, red and green! Although the name changed from 22.5″ to 22″, Weber specs declare the cooking grate is still 22.5″ diameter with the same 363 square inch capacity.

Weber Original Premium Overview
Weighing in at just over 32 pounds, the Weber Original Premium 22” Kettle is a lightweight grill featuring 363 square inches of cooking space. To put that into perspective, you’re looking at being able to fit thirteen burgers at a time on this grill’s plated steel cooking grate. That grate is hinged to allow for easy access to your coals.
The porcelain-enameled lid sits at a height of 7.5 inches, leaving you plenty of room to cook up some beer-can chicken or other sizable meats. A built-in thermometer can be found on the top of the lid. When you take that lid off, there’s also a convenient angled lid hook which allows the lid to hang on the side of the grill rather than being placed on the ground.
The Premium model comes equipped with the One-Touch cleaning system, an enclosed ash catcher, which is not present on the original model. This feature is a definite upgrade, as the open tray of the original allowed for ash to blow around everywhere while you were cooking. The Weber Original Premium 22” Kettle is also available in either black, copper, green, or limited-edition red.

Weber Original Premium Good
Easy Cleanup – As we said before, the One-Touch enclosed ash catcher is a definite upgrade, and we’re happy to see this feature. It can hold quite a lot of ashes and is easy to remove and reattach with the spring-loaded handle.
Convenient Design – Not only is the cleanup convenient, but there are several other features that are designed with the user’s convenience in mind – such as the heat shield on the lid, the hinged cooking grate, a lid hook to keep your lid off the ground, and a tool hook for your tongs and spatulas.
Portability – The Weber Original Premium 22” Kettle has a pair of heavy-duty, durable wheels built to withstand the elements and increase portability of the grill. Weighing just over 32 pounds, you can transport this grill all around your yard.
It’s a Classic – Weber is known for the dependability of their grills. The Premium Kettle has a few advanced features that make it superior to the original kettle, but once you have cooked on a Weber kettle, you will see why it has been one of the most popular names in grilling generation after generation.

Weber Original Premium Not So Good
Thermometer – All Webers have the obligatory bi-metal dial thermometer in the hood that gives you a ballpark reading of what the temperature is high above the meat. Since we cook on the grates, though, it’s always better to bring your own digital thermometer and place a probe there. It would be nice if they would go digital in the digital age and it appears with their acquisition of iGrill digital thermometers, this is beginning to change.
Three Leg Design – We loved the portability and high-quality wheels of the Weber Original Premium 22” Kettle, but the legs themselves can be a bit unstable at times, making it seem like the grill itself is a little top-heavy.
Weber Original Premium Quality
The Weber Original Premium 22” Kettle is a prime example of small but mighty. Fully assembled, it stands 38.5-inch by 27-inch by 22.5-inch and might appear somewhat small to many. However, its design and 363 square inches of cooking space make this grill bigger than it appears.
All of its parts are built to last, from the rust resistant aluminum damper on top down to its durable, heavy-duty wheels. The seal between the lid and body is tight, keeping temperatures under control. This excellent insulation is what allows you to use your Kettle grill as a smoker. The hinged plated steel grate allows quick access to the coals for replenishing during grilling.
It is also worth noting that you might remember Weber advertising its Kettles as 22.5”. While the new name reflects only 22”, the actual product dimensions are still a 22.5” diameter.
The detachable ash catcher is a highlight to this model, giving it an advantage over the original. We were impressed by just how much ash it could hold, and the ease with which it could be removed, emptied, and then reattached. Its impressive that the Weber Original Premium 22” Kettle can pack in as many features as it does and still keep such a low-price tag.
It’s a great entry-level grill for anyone who doesn’t want to shell out for the larger models with more features. The Weber Original Premium 22” Kettle does a great job, and is built to last, making it an especially great grill for the casual backyard grill master.

Weber Original Premium Ease of Use
The Weber Original Premium Kettle is very easy to assemble and should take less than a half hour total. Once you got down to grilling, the hinged grate allows you to quickly and easily replenish our coals, and the tight seal of the lid made sure we had even heat distribution.
There were some issues with the lid, namely the hook it was meant to hang on. While we found the lid hook to be more an inconvenience, we appreciate being able to remove the lid and not having to deal with the eventual rust and wear of a hinged lid.
Should You Buy the Weber Original Premium?
This is a great grill for beginners. It is easy to assemble and simple to use. It doesn’t have many extra features, but that simplicity can be an advantage. It is a versatile grill capable of cooking just about anything, so your grilling possibilities are really endless.
The cooking space is adequate and capable of much more than you would expect from its small appearance. Cleanup is fast and much easier than other models. Overall, we found the Weber Original Premium 22” Kettle to be well worth its price, and a dependable, backyard barbecue staple.
Charcoal vs Gas Question Answered:
Charcoal vs Gas – which is better? Ah, the age-old question of charcoal vs. gas. I’m not sure this question will ever be answered, but if you’re like me and you remember growing up on dad’s grilling from that charcoal flame, there’s definitely nothing like it.
I’ve owned both gas and charcoal grills in my life, and they each have their benefits and draw-backs. You can’t beat the convenience of gas – just turn it on and grill away. Charcoal requires a bit more patience and doesn’t always cook as evenly or as predictably as gas. I still say you’ll never get better flavor from a gas grill than from charcoal, so if taste is your priority, I’d definitely choose charcoal.
1. After assembly and before first use, use a permanent marker to mark the handle position of the lower vent. Mark the position at @ Fully closed, @ half open, @ ALL the WAY OPEN. this way it’s easier to adjust once you’re cooking and you don’t have to lift the lid.
2. I’ve used the Slow N Sear PLUS accessory and it works great! Just don’t put tin foil underneath it.
3. If you use a remote thermometer with temp probe, don’t put it under the lid, use the vent holes on top of the lid or drill a small hole in the lower half of the kettle just under the cooking grate.
Weber 22-Inch Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill Customer Reviews
“First off, I have to tell you that this is the first grill I have ever used. As a single woman, I was never interested in grilling until I bought a house two years ago and built a deck in the backyard. With all that outdoor space to enjoy, I just knew I needed a grill for entertaining (and feeding) family and friends. I thought I might buy a grill and just let my dad or brother handle the grilling, but much to my surprise I really got into it and loved grilling hamburgers and hot dogs on this Weber kettle grill for my first backyard party just yesterday!
I did a lot of research prior to purchasing this grill from Amazon. I chose a charcoal grill over propane because I didn’t want to deal with propane tanks (a friend had his grill go up in flames because of a loose hose and nearly burned his house down–No thank you!), I like the taste and smell from charcoal grills more, and most importantly because of the cost. It was less expensive to get a nice charcoal grill like this one than to get an equally nice propane grill. The entry cost into grilling was more reasonable with a charcoal grill. This freed up funds to get some important accessories, which I recommend to anyone buying this grill: a chimney starter, grilling tools like tongs, fork, etc, a steel brush to clean the grates, the Weber Fire starter cubes, and some heavy-duty mitts to protect your hands and forearms while grilling. I purchased all these from Amazon at the same time I purchased the grill.
As for choosing a which charcoal grill to get, I chose this model over the lesser expensive model because of the ash catcher, and I’m glad I did.
The grill arrived in its original box and was easy to put together on my own, with the exception of attaching the ash catcher itself. But I just kept trying (and referring to the picture-only instructions) and eventually got it. It was put together in about 40 minutes, and that was putting it together myself.
One of the best things I did was lookup videos online about this grill to see how it was used and put together. I learned about closing the vents on the lid and on the bottom to reduce heat, and how to quickly get the charcoal ready for grilling by using a chimney starter and Weber Fire Starter cubes (which I highly recommend getting).
As my brother and dad arrived at my house yesterday for our Memorial Day BBQ, each were skeptical about this charcoal grill because they have propane grills at home and like the convenience of them. “It will take an hour to get to coals ready,” said my brother. “Those burgers are way too thick to cook through. They’ll be raw in the middle,” said my dad.
Both were surprised when the charcoal was ready within about 20 minutes using the chimney! And after getting some nice grill marks on both sides of the burgers, I put the lid on and closed the vents to let them finish cooking the middle of the burgers in a lower heat. The burgers turned out perfectly! The best compliment was Dad and others asking me how I grilled these thick burgers so well without burning them to dust. LOL! It’s all in the vents! And I think investing in an awesome grill helped, too.
My brother and dad both were asking about the grill by the end of the party. I think they might be considering trading in their propane grills for their own Weber kettle grills soon. 😉
Lastly, just a bit of advice to any amateur grill masters like myself out there… Do yourself a favor and start out with this grill. All of the excellent reviews tell you that it’s a good grill. The fact that so many experienced backyard chefs keep returning to their Weber kettle grills is very telling. Also, be sure to look up recipes at YouTube. I searched for “hamburger on charcoal grill” and found lots of videos with great advice on getting perfect burgers. And bonus! Nearly all of the people in the videos were using a Weber kettle grill. :)” …. Read More
“I have had this grill for about 3 weeks, the first recipe I tried was beer can chicken. I have never had much success smoking before, but after reading reviews and weber.com recipes, I found a few different recipes and combined them, brine the chicken overnight with salt, wash off salt, season and smoke. The charcoal baskets are a must, and the best accessory for any grill.
After smoking the chicken for 1.5- 2 hours, I had one of my chef friends over that has been in the industry for years at some top-notch restaurants, he was thoroughly impressed with the smoked bird. I was quite happy with the results, I have done pork butt, couple racks of ribs, steaks and chops all excellent. My girlfriend has the same grill, I was impressed by the easy setup, the seal and round heating area. This is one of the best grills around and about 10x less than a hasty bake, same function.” …. Comparison: Weber Original Kettle vs. Weber Original Premium Kettle vs. Weber MasterTouch Kettle
We think the Weber Original Premium is already a great bang for your buck, but if you’re looking for a less expensive model, the Weber Original Kettle gives you the same great quality grill and cooking experience, just without a few extra features.
With the Weber Original Kettle, you will be missing out on the One-Touch cleaning system detachable ash catcher. Also absent with the Original is the hinged cooking grate and lid thermometer.
Looking for a step up from the Weber Original Premium Kettle? The more advanced model would be the Weber MasterTouch Kettle.
Its features include two charbasket charcoal holders, the famous Weber Gourmet BBQ system, and a warming rack. It is also about 2” taller than the Weber Original Premium Kettle and comes with a larger price tag.
